2014 -2015 Ficus Macrophylla
For this project I recorded through many drawings Moreton Bay Fig Trees around Sydney. I documented the trees' twists and turns, inter connection of limbs and buttress roots. The drawings required me to be really present with nature, to really "look".
The series is considering concepts of perception and phenomenology and specifically the text "Becoming Animal An Earthly Cosmology" by David Abrams. In this text, Abrams speaks of the need for 'a metamorphosis in our relation to land' in a society that takes our truths from technology (the smart phone/digital media) that keeps the living world at distance.
In June 2014 the initial drawings #1-29 were displayed at Danks Street Depot II Gallery. In June 2015 the large drawing and animation were exhibited at Gaffa Gallery 29 May - 8 June.
The projected ended with the drawings being burned and the ashes returned to the Earth.
